Care of Your Handmade Book

Leather Books

Your book has been individually hand bound in the finest goatskin or calfskin in archival binding styles that are both durable yet flexible. They contain acid-free Mohawk Superfine Smooth 118gsm paper for all pens and pencils. Memory Books are bound with Mohawk Heavy paper will spacers in the spine to support inclusions such as photographs, cuttings and postcards. Use acid-free adhesive methods for your inclusions, such as glue dots, photo corners or spray mount. Washi tape is also a popular and colourful option, especially for scrapbooking.

Care

It is best to store your book flat when not in use, such as on a desk, rather than standing on a bookshelf. Please protect your book from rain, liquids or oils as they may mark the leather. To avoid colour fading, please keep your book away from prolonged periods of direct sunlight, for example leaving it on a windowsill.

Cork Books

Cork requires no special care, but you may naturally want to avoid spills, art materials and direct sunlight.

Marbled Notebooks

Your Marbled Notebook contains Mohawk Superfine Smooth paper and is covered in Contemporary or Vintage hand marbled papers designed and produced by some of the best professional paper marblers working in Britain. The notebooks are hand sewn in linen thread and have rounded cover turn-ins for longevity. The paper is suitable for all fountain pens, ballpoints, biros and pencils.

Care

The nature of hand marbling is that some excess paint may remain on the paper's surface. To minimise transfer of paint I have treated the paper with fixative, however please protect light surfaces and textiles and keep the cover turn-ins where they are rather than using them to mark your place in the notebook. If excess paint is troublesome, you can wipe the covers with a soft cloth or kitchen roll.

Cotton Rag Books

Wabi Sabi, Japanese and Concertina Sketchbooks are bound in handmade recycled 100% cotton rag from the textile industry. The are hand sewn in linen thread in archival sewing styles to ensure your book never falls apart. The paper is gelatine-sized for ink, watercolour and printmaking and will support inclusions such as collage, mixed-media photographs.

Care

With these entirely paperback, 'exposed' designs, you will see their natural variations and imperfections increase with use and over time; this is an intended outcome with these designs.
