Accordion Books are a delightful option for visual artists, photographers, storytellers and scrapbookers. Handmade with quality heavy paper for light watercolour, collage, ink and inclusions, what seems on the surface to be a familiar style of book may on opening suddenly expand or pop-up well beyond the boundaries of its covers, holding a beautiful secret inside. Folded forms are favourites amongst book artists because they lend themselves to layers and movement and yet work incredibly well as static display books.

There seems to have been a flurry of interesting altered books, artists books and bookbinding activity lately in Dorset and beyond. Here's a round up:
April 24, 2015
Just one week until my bookbinding evening class starts! Are you coming? Bring yourself, a few pieces of silver for the tea and biscuit tin, and any interesting papers you might want to use.
We'll be looking at folded book forms in week 1, including the Turkish Map Fold, the Double Gatefold, The Accordion and the Hot Dog. We'll discuss developing their basic forms, incorporating them into other bindings and adding content to make Artist's Books.
If you need a reminder of timings, how to get there, etc please look here. And in the meantime, check out my Pinterest to see some examples of how book artists are using these folded forms.
See you there! We start at 7 so arrive a few minutes early to get settled in.

P.S If you missed out on the Spring course, I'm running it again in September.

Sunday's bookbinding workshop was a great success! Fellow tutor Laura Joy and I were joined by 6 participants, some of whom had made books before, others had not. We set up the day with examples of the book forms we'd be making. And sunflowers.
As well as a quick and simple Hot Dog booklet, everyone made a Concertina binding with a choice of 2 cover styles, a Double Pamphlet notebook and then a Japanese Stab Stitch binding. Book covers were made from maps, pages of photography books (otherwise destined for landfill) and plant fibre paper. One participant used her own cyanotype to make the cover of her Stab Stitch book.
Thank you to everyone who came, I hope you enjoyed it as much as Laura and I did. Thanks also to Pauline Stanley at Artisan Community Art Studio for providing such a great workspace and setting it up so wonderfully.
If you're continuing to make books and have any questions or would like some help, please feel free to ask here or email me: info@boundbyhand.co.uk You can also buy that waxed linen thread in small quantities here.
Look forward to seeing you on the 28th September for the Medieval Journal workshop!

Some are pretty, some are pretty minimal, none of these new paperback notebooks and sketchbook sets will break the bank. Explore the single and the double Pamphlet Stitch and the Accordion Fold...
Paperback Notebooks: £10 set of 2 in Pink, Blue or Orange.
I've paired floral and graphic prints with batik Nepalese Lokta paper to bind these sweet and slim notebooks.
Accordion Fold Sketchbook: £15 set of 3 in Sand; £10 set of 2 in Earth
Originally designed for an exhibition this summer, these sketchbooks are an inventive way to make and display your work. They're a very simple, clean design bound in the simple pamphlet stitch, but the pages are the accordion fold format - use it just like a regular book or open to its fullest extent for an unusual, expansive way to write, draw, collage, story-tell or make graphic novels.
Notebook Set: Double Pamphlet: £20 set of 3 in Earth or Cereal.
A single sheet of strong cover paper with a 'w' fold in the centre allows 2 signatures to be bound into one notebook in this Double Pamphlet style.
I'll be making more paperbacks in the new year and look forward to sharing more simple yet slightly unusual binding styles with you. I plan to start delivering adult workshops in book arts and bookbinding later in 2014, so if you'd like to learn how to make books like this, that you can then use to make your own art with, do sign up to my newsletter.

I make my work as simple and striking as possible and a recent commission for a bride in black leather with white accents couldn't have embodied that spirit more. That commission inspired more work in monochrome, exploring new binding styles including the Accordion and Double Gatefold, as well as theLongstitch with Linkstitch style you're familiar with.

Journal / Sketchbook: Monochrome £99 with natural raw edge. Ships worldwide.
