Browsing back through my images for #ThrowbackThursday on Instagram has prompted me to write another post in the PROJECT blog series.
I remember binding this bespoke journal last summer. It was a suprise retirement gift for a gentleman leaving his profession to help run a charity that supports The Plantation Garden, a Grade II English Heritage Victorian 'secret' garden in the city of Norwich.
The title page aptly featured a quotation from Amos Bronson Alcott, the 19th century American writer, philosopher, reformer, and father of Louisa May Alcott (author of Little Women):
"Who loves a garden still his Eden keeps"
The client requested this glossy Maroon goatskin with Teal binding thread; a delicious colour combination I hadn't tried before. Thank goodness she chose it as it's one of my favourites, now. (I often think that without my bespoke clients I'd make nothing but white books.)
You can see more images of the book and purchase a similar one here.
And if you're in Norwich, you know where to go! The Garden receives no regular funding from outside sources and meets its annual costs largely from membership fees, entry fees, sales of refreshments and merchandise, and income from special events, so please visit if you can.
